dustin & jean: married

10 years ago, they were hanging out as friends (and only friends) at a local coffee shop. 5 1/2 years ago, they were watching an episode of dexter and dustin stunned jean by asking her out. last sunday, they stood in front of the four of us and exchanged rings.
can we talk about the way dustin looks at his bride for a second? oh my word. so sweet.

childhood unplugged: april

spring break: bringing shrieks of joy…or pain across the nation. i love my kids. i really really do. and i like the idea of spring break. the reality of spring break, though, can be less than ideal, especially with young kids. the ideal: let them stay up late for popcorn and a movie as a treat so that they will sleep in the next morning. the reality: they stay up late and whine when they have to go to bed, even when it’s an hour past their regular bedtime. the next morning they are up even earlier than usual, are grumpy, fight with each other nonstop and shoot you death glares when you suggest an afternoon “quiet time”.
so even though we didn’t have big plans to go away this year, we threw together a last minute one night “staycation”. i googled hotels within a 2 hour drive that had a waterslide. squamish, here.we.come.
another family showed up after we had been there a few minutes, so i put my camera away so that i didn’t look like a creepazoid. but i could have shot inside there all day.
on our way home, following google maps, i looked for the road that cut closest to the water and we ended up here. thanks google!

steven & kathryn: engaged

“more city, less vintage country” is how they describe themselves, so it’s only fitting they will be wed in vancouver next month in a modern building with a garden backdrop. the irony comes in the fact they don’t really live anywhere near a city and have chosen to set up their home in a fairly rural lakeside community. it seemed only right, then, that we take some time to document their life in the country during their engagement session, if only to give their friends and family a glimpse of the place they call home (and to show they may just have a little country in their bones after all).

lots of people ask: what do we do if it’s raining the day of our session. why, we go to the beach, of course. SO much laughter with these two…which helped brighten our spirits because it was REALLY wet!
their fall wedding is up at howe sound brewing company in squamish and after a recent trip to scout it out, i know it’s going to be magical!

keith & laura: married

keith & laura. brilliant, beautiful souls. after being present and hearing all of the stories at their wedding, i feel like i got even more insight into who they are…and that is a generous, kind, warm and genuine couple. pretty sure they were made for each other. they also know how to throw a fabulous party. oh and keith has been known to wear women’s jeans. but that’s besides the point.

brody & amanda: engaged

brody was cautious, which i really respect. while he admired her intelligence and was drawn to her beautiful smile, she was inspired by his strong character. they took their time getting to know each other before committing seriously (which at the time was kind of annoying for amanda as she sure felt ready ;).
now here they are on the brink of being married and there’s no mistaking…it’s love. 
the roads were slightly treacherous coming down and we found ourselves stuck behind someone who had no clue how to drive in snow (it would have been comical if it wasn’t so terribly dangerous), so we ended up on a detour right past this rock face. thank you, bad driver and lady who insisted on trying to push the passenger’s side of the truck to try and get it off the shoulder (like i said, comical). 
so looking forward to their wedding at the ubc boathouse this summer!

“koreans all look alike”, she said. “it’s okay, i can say that because i’m korean. so i was at a conference and there was this room full of korean men, all dressed in suits, looking exactly alike. except for one. he was wearing a suit, but when he sat down, you could see just a hint of a rainbow sock peeking out from under his pant leg. that intrigued me.”

childhood unplugged: march

we so rarely get snow around here that on the rare occasion we do, it means an intense amount of playing. especially since it only lasts for a day or two before melting away. this winter was no exception and two out of three of my kids were a little more than obsessed with the white stuff.
snowball making/stashing as well as picking a discreet base is key…this guy has really honed his skills (and his aim) and gives me a run for my money every time.
and the big dude is the biggest kid of them all. growing up out east, he misses the snow and takes every opportunity to get right in it and haul anyone within reach down with him. many memories of snowy walks in the prairies when we were dating, looking at stars, holding hands…until i was face first in a snow drift. so romantic.
