film inspired vintage wedding: sam & adriana

Friday, August 24th, 2012

sam  is a videographer and adriana a budding photographer, so you can only imagine the creative feast for the eyes their wedding was!  the natural beauty of the rustic property decorated by adriana and her team of crafting warriors culminated in a beautifully magical backdrop for what was truly a special day.

sam & adriana’s engagement picture session was my most popular post on this blog to date, so i was a little nervous about trying to “top” that with their wedding.  but there’s something about a wedding that evokes so much emotion and draws out so much pure love…looking back on these pictures, i “feel”.  which is all i can hope for.  i hope you see and feel the day right along with me, even if you weren’t able to be there in person.

recognize the movie poster sam is re-enacting below…?

though sam now makes movies himself, his love for the movies started at a young age where he attempted to smuggle himself along on a date night by hiding in the backseat of the car while his parents were getting ready to leave.  so it only made sense that the reception would revolve around the couple’s shared love for the movies, from the “ticket stub” seating chart to the outdoor theatre complete with candy and popcorn, no detail was forgotten.  there were so many personal touches as well, including hundreds of bundled love letters on each table that adriana’s grandparents had handwritten to one another dating back over 60 years.  it’s amazing to see the legacy of love and faith that both families have left for their children…what an incredible example for them to build their marriage on.

retro fort langley wedding: mark & beth

Monday, August 13th, 2012

so this may very well be the most outrageously large blog post i ever publish, but you know what?  i don’t care.  it’s worth it!!

this was one of those days that moved me.  not just because it was beautiful, but because i love this couple to bits.  obviously, as individuals they are wonderful.  but as a couple they are like, triple threat, bomb diggity, bowl you over, knock your socks off incredible duo…they can’t be stopped.

and so, it is with great joy that i share their wedding day with you.  beth brilliantly dreamt up a day that fit them to a tee…sweet, personal, delicate, natural, quirky and fun.

i’m always so tempted to tell the story of each picture because there’s just SO MUCH to be said, but i’m going to try and keep quiet and let the images speak for themselves.  feel free to make up your own story as you go – i kind of appreciate when someone lets me use my imagination anyway.

the poor little ring bearer got a little confused about who/where his daddy was, which provided us with a few laughs, but may have scarred him for life…

Reception: Fort Langley Community Hall / Caterer: Seasonal Experience (amazing food!!) / DJ: Simon Bridgefoot / Photo booth: Cheddar Booth / Bridal gown seamstress: Dinah Vanderhorst / Bride’s Hair: Tessa Suderman / Bridesmaids’ Jewelry: elephantine & amerrymishap / Flowers: collected from various friends / Tons of DIY projects put together by the bride and her friends and family!

harrison hot springs wedding: jason & bethany

Wednesday, August 1st, 2012

peace.

i think that’s how i would describe this day: peaceful.  no mad dashes, no fiascos.  just a picture of peace.  we were lakeside at greenpoint park in harrison and it was beautiful.  everyone was drawn to this wedding, including a couple of tracksuit clad grannies and a multitude of mosquitoes…there was something for everyone 🙂

you may remember jason and bethany from their pie themed engagement shoot.  their wedding represented them well and was full of gorgeous blooms, feather details, lace and of course…more pie.

they were still as sweet and relaxed as ever and i loved getting to meet their families and spend time with their friends.  you can learn so much about a person by meeting those they surround themselves with and it’s no surprise that these two have become so gracious and kind now that i’ve hung out with the people that raised them.

Bride’s dress: David’s Bridal / Headpieces and Boutineres: Carmen West Creative / Ceremony: Greenpoint Park / Reception: Harrison Memorial Hall

and special thank to my amazing assistant, sadia!  she showed up to this wedding even though it was her moving day and her husband’s birthday and she worked so hard.  such a lovely girl!

abbotsford lifestyle photography: everett’s birth

Monday, July 30th, 2012

it’s hard for me to sum up this experience in words.  lucky for me, i take pictures too.

i got to photograph my first birth.  i had warned rachel that i could not commit to being there due to the busy wedding season, but i would do my best to make it there as quickly as i could after the baby arrived.  none of us were expecting what came next.

just after 8:00 on a friday morning 2 weeks before babe was due to arrive, i got a text: “in labour”.  i arrived at the house about 40 minutes later and she was in the final stretches.  problem was, her husband grant wasn’t home from work yet. he had left for vancouver early that morning and since no one expected this baby to come so soon, he wasn’t even sure she was in labor when he got the first call.  the midwife said later she could tell rachel was subconsciously holding on so grant could get there…

20 minutes later, everett arrived as quickly and quietly as labour had begun. while rachel lay in the tub, stunned at what just occurred, daddy came home and was as shocked as the rest of us that babe was here.  i’m so glad that i was able to make it in time so that grant has the pictures to look back on.  thankfully rachel had an amazing team of women, between her midwives and her doula, so she was fully supported through the whole process.

i think it took me a good couple of day to come down from the adrenaline high of witnessing this.  it was so surreal…the only time i’ve ever been in a room for a baby’s birth was with my own, so it was strange when i was back home by lunchtime with no babe in my arms!  thank you rachel and grant for inviting me into this process with you!  it was such a miracle and such a blessing for me to be a part of it.

lakeside wedding: derek & melissa

Wednesday, July 25th, 2012

i don’t know if i’ve ever been to a wedding that had SO many elements which reflected the character of the bride and groom and was so truly unique to them.  from the peruvian embroidery to highlight derek’s childhood to the traditional german bee sting cake from melissa’s heritage, they did their best to incorporate things that were meaningful to them and reflected their history as individuals and as a couple.

they both love the outdoors, so it was a no-brainer that the wedding would be outside and a member of derek’s family so generously opened their property for us to enjoy.  it felt like the sound of music up there…gotta remember to wear my twirly blue dress next time (i may or may not have busted out a little “hills are alive” for old times sake).  melissa arrived at the ceremony escorted by her dad in a row boat and she and derek planted a tree together to signify the roots they were establishing and the new life they were creating together.  and while melissa’s brother made lattes and we munched on prosciutto wrapped asparagus, people told stories, sang songs, wept, laughed and danced while the sun went down.

the krahn family: expecting

Friday, July 20th, 2012

on the move. i think that is the best way to describe our time together.  just when we were getting settled, it was back on the street.  up stairs. down stairs. in trees. on benches. pressing buttons. looking in windows. knocking on doors (p.s. if anyone in downtown chilliwack got nicky-nicky-nine doored early evening last week, sorry about that.  it was probably us).  this is going to be one busy mama, but she sure seems ready.  i love it.

mike & jamie: married

Wednesday, July 18th, 2012

mike & jamie.  the obvious place to start with these two would be the height thing, but that’s the thing: it’s obvious.  the things that might not be so obvious to a passing stranger would be jamie’s grace and kindness or mike’s sense of humor and sensitivity.  those are the things that make them a really great couple.  the fact that he’s 10 feet tall and she’s smaller than a breadbox is just another factor that adds to their awesomeness.

we were all a little shocked to learn that jesus was such a close relative of the barnum family…

it was also grandpa’s birthday and their wedding anniversary, so we just had to throw in a few quick snaps of these two lovebirds.

i had such a fun time with you and your families and bridal party…i love that you all really know how to laugh!               all the details of the reception were so sweet, from the white hydrangeas (my favorite flower) to the “family favorites” dessert table.  the whole day was perfect!

jordy & jocelyn: married

Tuesday, July 10th, 2012

this wedding holds an extra special place in my heart, not only because the couple is amazing, but because the ceremony was held in the church i attended as a young girl.  it was so neat to be back inside the sanctuary with the wooden pews and the big windows…lots of memories here.  i may or may not have been surprised by my first kiss in a sunday school room closet.

i love the look on jordy’s face when he saw jocelyn for the first time.  he kept saying throughout the day “how in the world did i get a bride this beautiful?”  so great.

i loved having the privilege of watching you two walk into this new life together.  all the best!

the griffioens: family

Wednesday, July 4th, 2012

ok.  so i will be completely honest.  when tricia contacted me and told me she had 4 boys between the ages of 4 and 10, i was a little frightened.  then she told me she wanted something “fun and lighthearted” and that, my friends, was music to my ears.  i knew we had to go somewhere that the boys could explore and run around and not feel cooped up in “cheese” mode.

well i tell ya, these boys showed up and they were so amazing – i don’t know what kind of treats she promised them, but i hope they got lots.  because they rocked it.

we even made a friend…of the animal variety.  apparently this little guy was hungry and needed to find a way back home.  the boys were so sweet and helped him back into his natural habitat.

so if you happen to be in the park in a few months and see a lovely little butterfly float by, you’ll know a bit of his story.  and you can thank the griffioen boys.

frances: new life

Monday, July 2nd, 2012

sisters.

the big sister was one of the first to greet me at the door, excited to show off the little sister:

little sister was slightly less excited about having her picture taken, but with a little prodding (and a lot of eating), she warmed up to me.
