whether they started dating 8 or 9 years ago is kinda besides the point (though there was a heated discussion as to which it was the morning of the wedding). the point is that they spotted each other in middle school…cam was the new kid and in a small private school, everyone had their eye on him. but britney was determined. it didn’t take long and they were an item, one that would become much more than a preteen fling. they endured high school, survived being separated by distance in university, were engaged in versailles and now married in kelowna surrounded by family, long time friends and even some of their school teachers who remember watching their romance bloom. they are an incredibly gracious couple and i am so lucky they chose me to document their day!

childhood unplugged: september

let’s be real. in my busiest seasons, my family suffers a bit. i’m not as available, i’m gone when other families are out doing things, i’m not cooking (or cleaning). and most days, the last thing i want to do is pull out my camera to take pictures of them. one of the things i realized, though, is that neglecting to document them as much as i do my clients leaves a hole…a space where my heart isn’t being stretched in new ways and where my eyes aren’t being challenged to see beyond the surface. so when i do finally pick up my camera and choose them…my heart and mind explode with creativity and i don’t ever want to stop. these images may not be technically (or in any other way) perfect, but they are what matter because they show me my kids as they are. right now. i see their unique personalities and the way they approach the world, i see the tangled hair and the layer of dirt and sweat that is ever present in these summer months, i see the laughter and the (inevitable) tears which will (inevitably) once again turn to laughs, i see their little hearts beating through their chests, full of life and struggle and joy. this is the stuff for me. right here, right now.

chilliwack backyard wedding: morgan & jessica

it takes a village.
it all started with a little girl named amaya. she and her dad, morgan, needed a village to support them as he worked full-time to provide for their family. this is where the small town childcare centre stepped in, where morgan’s sister worked with a lovely young lady, jessica. morgan’s sister watched love start to grow in jessica’s heart for this little girl and she couldn’t help but take matters into her own hands to try to connect jessica with morgan.
and the rest is history. the village that walked with them as individuals and brought them together as a couple threw them an incredible party to celebrate their union and set the foundation for their family.

childhood unplugged: august

it’s difficult to even know where to begin when describing the wonder that we experienced on our trip to yellowstone and back. every place was so uniquely beautiful. and the people were even better. when we were looking at our summer trying to plan a getaway, a strategically placed weekend off meant we could make our first trek to visit my sister and her family who live in mammoth on the northern edge of yellowstone park. our route was dictated by the desire to connect with dear friends in high river, so though we took the long way, it was well worth it.
one of the best things about this trip for me was how well our kids handled the inconsistency and the amount of time we spent in the car. we did our best to make fun stops for them and to give them lots of activity (and food) while we drove. books on tape, wildlife spotting, roadside rock skipping and the license plate game were our saviours.
so here it is, the journey from western british columbia to the shuswap to southern alberta to the united states border to northern montana and finally the edge of wyoming. some planned stops, some not, pictures taken from mountain tops and through car windows.
some montana skies for y’all.
this doesn’t even include our trip back which brought us through idaho and eastern washington…but that will have to wait for now! check out all the other summer adventures of my childhood unplugged cohorts.

backyard wedding | dave & jennah: married

dave & jennah. their story is movie-like…one where timing never seemed to line up until one day it just did. jennah was the kid sister and dave was the brothers’ friend and that was where it ended. but jennah grew up and dave got wise and saw the gem that had been sitting right under his nose. it took them a false start or two to get things going, but once they knew, they knew. and now here we are, dancing under the light of the stars as two families that have always been joined watch their children choose each other.

daryl & retty. it was only fitting that they were married on a mountaintop…this day was the culmination of a long journey that lead the two of them together. they wanted to remember the past and celebrate the future with their friends and family, in the presence of their creator, surrounded by the most stunning natural backdrop you can imagine. this day was full of much laughter and a few joyful tears – just how it should be.
the staff at the sea to sky gondola were amazing and so accommodating, i would highly recommend this venue! special thanks as well to my second shooter, justine boulin.

childhood unplugged: july

let’s just say that you have friends over to camp out in your backyard and you start talking about science around the campfire. and let’s just say talk turns to dissection and i start recounting my teenage fascination with the subject. and let’s just say i take it a little too far and suggest to one of the kids that we go hunting for a frog in the backyard (never having any intention of cutting it open, let alone actually catching one!). and let’s just say frogs are easier to catch than i thought and within a few minutes of searching, we had already bagged a huge one. 
don’t worry, y’all…we released him back into the wild (only after he scared the crap out of us several times). it was a fun adventure, to say the least! check out the other family adventures at childhood unplugged this month!

ubc boathouse wedding: josh & meggie

josh & meggie make sense. have you ever spent time around a couple that just seem to “fit”? not that they are exactly alike (far from it, for that matter), but that they are at ease around one another. i just think it’s pretty incredible that two people from across the country, coming from different backgrounds with different families and different history can be so comfortable together. it’s pretty magical, actually.
