vancouver family photographer | the krahns: family

the thing about family photography (at least the way i approach it) is that you are forced to abandon nearly all the basic principles one would look for in an “ideal” shoot: perfect light, nice posing, straight lines, some sense of control, a plan…not to say that those won’t line up at some point, but with young children, you just can’t expect that they will.  so what you’re left with is your camera (and the knowledge of how to use it), your instincts, your subjects and inevitably your sense of humor because if you’re like me, you’re going to end up in some awkward/potentially humiliating positions and you’re going to need to know how to laugh that off and keep going.

the beauty in all of that is that without the control, you are gifted with some of the most incredibly raw moments, with movement and play, with genuine emotion and interaction that you could never force or pose.  and yeah, the horizon might not be straight because i was in the process of being attacked in a leaf fight and yeah the focus might be a little soft because mom was laughing as she tipped her son upside down and yeah they might be squinting a bit because they were busy spotting seagulls, but man do i FEEL it.  these are the images i want to create for you.  Kits beach family Pictures | Sharalee Prang Photography_179Kits beach family Pictures | Sharalee Prang Photography_180 Kits beach family Pictures | Sharalee Prang Photography_181 Kits beach family Pictures | Sharalee Prang Photography_182 Kits beach family Pictures | Sharalee Prang Photography_183 Kits beach family Pictures | Sharalee Prang Photography_184 Kits beach family Pictures | Sharalee Prang Photography_185 Kits beach family Pictures | Sharalee Prang Photography_186 Kits beach family Pictures | Sharalee Prang Photography_187 Kits beach family Pictures | Sharalee Prang Photography_188 Kits beach family Pictures | Sharalee Prang Photography_189 Kits beach family Pictures | Sharalee Prang Photography_190 Kits beach family Pictures | Sharalee Prang Photography_191 Kits beach family Pictures | Sharalee Prang Photography_192 Kits beach family Pictures | Sharalee Prang Photography_193 Kits beach family Pictures | Sharalee Prang Photography_194 Kits beach family Pictures | Sharalee Prang Photography_196 Kits beach family Pictures | Sharalee Prang Photography_197Kits beach family Pictures | Sharalee Prang Photography_199Kits beach family Pictures | Sharalee Prang Photography_198 Kits beach family Pictures | Sharalee Prang Photography_200 Kits beach family Pictures | Sharalee Prang Photography_201 Kits beach family Pictures | Sharalee Prang Photography_202see more of this lovely family and their youngest’s birth story here!

primrose: new life

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2013

so, pretty much everyone loves babies.  even if they don’t like to hold babies, they like to look at them, coo at them, put sunglasses on them and laugh…you know how it goes.  and of course, parents are always downright smitten with these little creatures.  even the toughest of new dads tends to melt down into googoogaga talk at some point and even the most tired of new mamas won’t be able to keep their eyes off their child for more than a few moments.  we expect it, right?

and while all of that is beautiful and touching to witness, let me tell you what really gets me every time.  as these two exhausted people gaze at their sweet sleeping baby, sometimes for just a moment their weary eyes will meet and in that few seconds, so much love is exchanged.  a mutual admiration and respect, a newfound depth of “knowing”; knowing that together they have participated in creating life, knowing that this life bonds them to one another like never before, knowing that while they have a huge responsibility laying before them in the form of a pink, chubby and completely dependant human being…they also have each other.  this.  this expression of family really and truly gets me every. time.

see what i mean?

shaun & jeanie: family

Friday, November 2nd, 2012

i know i’ve been a little absent lately and for that, i apologize.  don’t worry, i have still been working…editing and packaging summer weddings, taking some family sessions, prepping for next year, etc. etc.

but i have also been breathing.  which feels nice because i kinda forgot that my body and mind and heart and soul actually need me to every once in awhile.  so i might not have blogged that much, but i’m still here and i assure you am not going anywhere 🙂 (p.s. if you’d like a little insight on my day to day while the blog is quiet, you can find me on instagram @sharaleprang).

here are a few snaps from a sweet family i had the pleasure of meeting “down by the river” recently.  don’t worry: they don’t live in a van.

our family getaway

Wednesday, May 30th, 2012

a family vacation looked like a near impossibility this year.  that is, until a delightful turn of events lead us to the last place we expected to be in may: hawaii.  and there we were.  for two. whole. weeks.  absolutely brilliant.

i was determined to ACTUALLY take time off.  which is difficult as the nature of my work lends itself to being done anywhere and everywhere.  but aside from a little correspondence and some midnight brainstorming sessions, i think i did pretty well.  i brought my old camera and one lens, but don’t think for one second that i didn’t feel like offering every family i saw on the beach a photo session.  i have become aware of the fact that i am officially addicted to taking other people’s pictures.  i was watching moments unfold all over the place and all i wanted to do was document them.  but then i reminded myself why i was there and who i was there with and set about living life with my family.  and taking pictures of them for once!

this little dude is becoming increasingly elusive when the camera comes out.  we had some chats about why i like taking pictures so much and how it was okay if he made funny faces sometimes and reminded him that though he may not like having his picture taken, he sure likes looking at himself in pictures after they are over.  so he started to humor me every once in awhile.

this girl blows me away.  she’s the best out of the three at ignoring me when i have the camera, which is just fine with me.  closer to the end of the trip she started to pose and it was freaking me out a little bit.  her “princess pose” has her sweeping her hair across her forehead with her shoulders scrunched up and her head tilted to one side.  um, yeah.  this could be problematic.

some of my favorite shots from the trip are of this one.  i am falling more and more in love with him every day.  and have probably gained more and more grey hairs in the same number of days.  you think you know what you’re doing after two kids.  and then the third comes along and is like “oh yeah?  in your dreams, lady.  in your dreams.”  but his face…would you look at that face?

and then there’s this one.  nearly every picture i took of him has the water in the background.  this man loves the water.  so my goal this year is to get him to it more often.  because if he’s happy, i’m happy.

what an amazing trip.  if you’re heading to maui and want to hear about our favorite places to visit, drop me a line!  they include the town of paia and the most amazing pizza you may ever ingest, leoda’s (best apple crumble pie), the maui swap meet on saturdays (so much good produce and a great place to get a feel for the kinds of treats you can take home with you)…the list goes on.

and if you’re heading to maui and want to bring me along to take pictures like this of your family, call me!

the pauls’: family

Sunday, December 11th, 2011

this lovely family won a session with me from a silent auction benefiting our friends, jon & bonnie, who are missionaries in thailand.  little did i know when i was corresponding with jenilee her husband is a guy that i grew up with!  i hadn’t seen him in about fifteen years, so it was a treat to meet his family and play with his kids.  who are adorable, i might add.  after being greeted by this little beauty when i walked though the door, i knew we were going to have a great time.

and if their kids all look young, it’s because they are.  3 in three years!!  and this gorgeous mama doesn’t even looked tired.  thanks for having me to your home!

triple threat alert: andrianne is not only a gifted photographer, an amazing hair stylist and an incredible mom…she’s also super hot.  and married to a great guy.  which kind of seems unfair, you know?  either way, when she asked if i would take some pictures of their newly expanded family, i jumped at the chance.  i’ve said it before and will say it again: it’s such an honor when a fellow photographer asks me to take their picture.  she had taken lots of the little man on his own, so we focused more on pictures of the three of them, which is so fun because my favorite thing about baby sessions is watching parents interact with these little creatures.  so much genuine emotion…i just get to sit back and watch it unfold.

we fit a whole lot into about 30 minutes and these guys were such troopers.  thank you again!

the armours: family

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

so, if you happen to be a jealous person, you might want to stop looking at my blog for awhile.  because i’ve been taking pictures of so many ridiculously good-looking people lately, i can hardly look at my own blog anymore.

i met tasha at the fieldstone vintage market (which incidentally is happening again on december 3!!)and she booked me on the spot.  a few weeks later, i met up with her lovely family at the park and the day couldn’t have been more perfect.

misty had wanted family pictures done for awhile and after seeing her cousin dave’s wedding pictures, she settled on having me take them.  i’m SO glad – this family is amazing.  girls that wear dresses…and climb trees.  what more could you ask for?  seriously.

they co-own a bike shop in fort langley (they sell. they rent.  they fix.  they have a sweet mission statement which includes the line “We also believe that cycling is the most amazing tactical sport ever conceived. Really, it’s not even debatable”. in short, you should go check them out.) so they wanted to incorporate bikes into the session.

i love the next shot.  a lot.

misty is running for council in langley.  if you live there, please go check out her platform and make sure you get out to vote!

with this little, we got the best of both worlds.  started off smooshed and sleepy and ended awake and happy.  she’s a sweet one and reminds me of my babies because she’s got some meat on her bones 🙂

i had taken pictures of her cousin a week previous and am already imagining these two as best buds in a few years, getting into their mom’s make-up and torturing their older brothers with boy band music and girly attitude.

meet landon.  he’s silly.  i can’t imagine where he got it from…his parents are both so serious.
